Minister Cateriano,
General,
Admirals,
Crew members of His Netherlands Majesty’s Ship Amsterdam and Buque Armada Peruana Tacna,
Dear guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Less than a half year ago, Peru and the Netherlands signed a contract for the handover of HNLMS Amsterdam. And since that moment, both countries have worked hard to make this handover possible.
The goal was clear. The Amsterdam had to be ready before the start of the next hurricane season. Ready to be used for humanitarian assistance in coastal areas. Areas that - if hit by a major hurricane - would become virtually inaccessible.
Support from the sea can, in such circumstances, offer a solution. And the Amsterdam lends itself perfectly to such situations. Helicopter operations can be carried out from the ship. Those affected can be given medical treatment in the medical facility. And goods can be transported!
The handover process has taken place largely behind the scenes - as is often the case. By now, our colleagues in the Peruvian navy know how to operate the systems on board the Amsterdam!
Mind you, during the handover process, the Amsterdam continued to perform her duties as a supply ship. The workload for the crew was enormous. I fully realise that. But I note with pride that all the tasks were carried out not only very well but also with an abundance of energy, for which I give my heartfelt thanks.
It goes without saying that the lowering of the Dutch flag, and thus the parting of ways of HNLMS Amsterdam and the Royal Netherlands Navy...is an imposing moment! That speaks for itself.
More importantly, it is not just a ship we are parting ways with. In its 19-year history, HNLMS Amsterdam has given us a maximum return on our investment! Crew members have shared their joys and sorrows with each other. They have endured many storms - both literally and figuratively.
They have devoted themselves to freedom, security and prosperity all around the world.
Up until its last moment in the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Amsterdam has proven her great value, and much more!
Minister Cateriano,
The smooth handover process is a reflection of the friendship between our two countries! And that is a good thing. It is a friendship that I cherish. I wish you success and all the best with the 'Buque Armada Peruana Tacna'!
I hope - and expect - that this ship will do a lot for your country.
With this ship, I wish you fair winds and following seas!
Thank you.
