Greece: Tragic incident in the Aegean
"It is an absolute obscenity that European leaders allow tragedy after tragedy to occur off our shores without taking effective and coordinated action to stop it and provide safe and legal routes for people to seek refuge," said Gauri van Gulik, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for
Europe.
"Our hearts sink yet again as more people including children lost their lives off the coast of Lesvos tonight. Brave coastguard responders are doing their best and volunteers are bracing themselves for the worst.
"What we don't need in the wake of this tragedy is another 'extraordinary' meeting that leads to a dead end. What would be truly out of the ordinary - but completely necessary - is real and concerted action."
