Winnaars Bio Art & Design Award 2015 bekend

Deze drie projecten, ieder goed voor 25.000 euro, zijn vrijdag 22 mei door een vijfkoppige internationale jury uitgeroepen tot winnaars van de Bio Art & Design Award 2015. Bij de uitvoering van elk BAD Award-project is een Nederlandse biowetenschapper nauw betrokken.
De internationale jury, bestaande uit voorzitter William Myers (VS), Ian Brunswick (Science Gallery Dublin, Ierland), Karen Verschooren (STUK, Belgie) en Laurens Landeweerd (RUN/TUD, Nederland) koos deze winnaars uit tien teams van samenwerkende internationale kunstenaars/ontwerpers en
wetenschappers aan Nederlandse onderzoeksinstellingen.
Vanaf 27 november 2015 zijn de voltooide kunstwerken van de winnaars te zien bij MU, centrum voor visuele cultuur in Eindhoven. Winnaars van de BAD Award 2015 - kunstenaars en wetenschappers - lichten hun lopende project toe op de BAD Award expositie tijdens het wetenschap-ontmoet-pers
evenement Bessensap (12 juni 2015). Er is daar ook werk van eerdere winnaars te zien.

The MSA: Microbiome Security Agency

information about the people and places you've encountered. But how is this information protected? Empowering individuals to secure their own data, The MSA provides the public with a toolkit of DIY biological information manipulation tactics.
Drones with desires

The focus of `Drones with desires' is to breathe life into mechanical devices through altering their material substance. With an increased efficiency of modelling the brain for artificialintelligence or the introduction of mechanics within biomedical sciences, where are theboundaries of
human-ness in a world full of integrated and invasive technologies? How mightwe respond to a machine that characterizes human behaviors through a reconstructed sensory nervous system? This project will explore the thin line between natural and artifice, by creating a machine with inbuilt human
memories.
The Art of Deception

Humans use deception to achieve perfection in society, art and science. Reacting to this through art, we take discarded pig hearts and transform them into elegant vessels for new life by decellularizing them and re-populating them with various techniques, into new fully functional and
aesthetically improved hearts for humans. We aim to explore how biological interventions and aesthetic manipulation can be used as tools for the ultimate deception: the transformation of inner beauty, from grotesque to perfect.
Achtergrond BAD Award
De BAD Award is een jaarlijkse internationale competitie. Het doel is kunstenaars en ontwerpers die maximaal vijf jaar geleden zijn afgestudeerd te laten experimenteren met biokunst en -design en het verleggen van de grenzen van kunst en wetenschap. De BAD Award 2015 wordt mogelijk gemaakt
door ZonMw, NWO, Waag Society, MU, TU/e en BioArt Laboratories. De BAD Award is een voortzetting van de Designers & Artists for Genomics Award (DA4GA) die tussen 2010 en 2013 internationaal naam maakte. Opgezet door het Netherlands Genomics Initiative (NGI) en Waag Society groeide de prijs uit
tot een stimulans voor de snel groeiende groep jonge creatieven die zich in hun werk richten op de nieuwe mogelijkheden die de biotechnologie biedt.
