EURO MPs BACK BETTER DEAL FOR PEOPLE WORKING ABROAD
22 april 2009
Euro MPs today gave the green light by an overwhelming majority - 633
to 13 - for new rules to help people working in another EU country.
Said Socialist Euro MP Jan Cremer who brokered the deal with EU
governments: "After several months of negotiations, we have reached a
fair agreement to the benefit of our citizens. EU citizens will be
better informed about their rights to social security and pensions
when they work abroad.
"These new rules will improve cooperation between member states when
it comes to the transfer of pensions, health care or other social
security benefits.
"In the negotiations, I put great emphasis on how we can make things
easier for citizens. An important aspect of this is that they will
have to be clearly informed about their rights".
The present EU regulation aims to streamline coordination of social
security systems that apply when people move around Europe.
