Persbericht: Nederlandse ontvangt prestigieuze Sauvé Scholarship
PvdA-campagnestrateeg wendt beurs aan voor Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen
De Rotterdamse Kirsten Verdel is de eerste Nederlander ooit die de prestigieuze Canadese Sauvé Scholarship krijgt. De beurs van McGill University in Montréal is meer dan 30.000 dollar waard en wordt jaarlijks aan maximaal 14 mensen wereldwijd toegekend aan wie 'high leadership potential' wordt toegedicht.
Verdel gebruikt de beurs om onderzoek te doen naar de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen in 2008. De 29-jarige politica werkte de afgelopen jaren als campagneleider van de PvdA in Rotterdam ten tijde van de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen van 2006. Ook was ze onder andere actief in het landelijk campagneteam en organiseerde ze een succesvolle actie om oud-minister Klaas de Vries in de Eerste Kamer te krijgen.
Verdel gaat na april 2008 tot aan de verkiezingen aan de slag bij het campagneteam van de Democraten in de hoop de komst van een nieuwe democratische president te forceren. Hiertoe is inmiddels contact gelegd met het campagneteam van Hillary Clinton. Met de opgedane kennis hoopt de Rotterdamse ook een injectie te kunnen geven aan toekomstige PvdA-campagnes.
Verdel zal zich in Canada echter eerst verder gaan verdiepen in vraagstukken over ontwikkelingssamenwerking. De afgelopen jaren maakte ze al reizen naar een weeshuis voor zwaar gehandicapte kinderen in China en naar het door burgeroorlog getroffen West-Afrikaanse Sierra Leone, om hulpacties op touw te zetten. Verdel: 'Het bouwen van een weeshuis of school is makkelijk. Maar hoe pak je fundamentele verandering aan met de beperkte middelen die je bijvoorbeeld als overheid hebt? Als alles slecht is, waar begin je dan mee? Onderwijs, gezondheidszorg, infrastructuur of juist de economie? Of moeten bepaalde zaken tegelijk worden aangepakt om structurele verbetering te realiseren? Dat soort vragen, daar wil ik dieper in duiken.'
De missie van de Sauvé Scholarship is 'talentvolle jonge volwassen met bewezen leiderschapscapaciteiten de kans te geven zichzelf verder te ontwikkelen, zodat ze later een verschil kunnen maken en kunnen helpen bouwen aan een betere toekomst voor de samenleving van morgen'.
De bursalen zijn geheel vrij in hun tijdsbesteding gedurende hun negen maanden in het Noord-Amerikaanse land. Ze kunnen bijvoorbeeld colleges volgen, onderzoek doen of een boek schrijven. Om zelfontplooiing de grootst mogelijke kans te geven hoeven er geen examens te worden afgelegd, ook hoeft er geen eindproduct te worden afgeleverd. Jaarlijks melden talloze mensen van over de hele wereld zich aan voor de beurs.

Press release: Young Dutch politician receives prestigious Sauvé Scholarship
29-year-old Kirsten Verdel from Rotterdam is the first Dutch citizen to receive the prestigious Sauvé Scholarship offered by the Sauvé Scholars Foundation of Montréal, Québec, Canada. The scholarship is worth roughly $30,000 and is awarded to a maximum of fourteen international young professionals, students and academics each year. The program is run in collaboration with McGill University in Montreal.
The mission of the Sauvé Scholars Foundation is to help prepare young adults in their 20s so that they can develop their potential and skills to be used towards making a difference and building a better future for the societies of tomorrow.
The Foundation has chosen to implement this mission by gathering in Montreal a highly-talented and motivated group of post-graduate, or equivalent, young emerging leaders, to share an experience together of inquiry, debate and reflection, to help advance their careers, intellectual capacity and, importantly, leadership potential.
Verdel is highly involved in politics. She was an elected member of the provincial parliament of South-Holland for the Social Democratic Party PvdA. She has worked in various successful political campaigns at the local, provincial and national level. Verdel will use the Sauvé scholarship to do research on next year's US presidential elections. After April 2008, she will commence work for the Democratic party, doing her part to ensure a Democratic victory! For this, she has already made contact with Hillary Clinton's campaign team. Verdel hopes to apply her experience in the US, and as a Sauvé scholar, to future PvdA campaigns.
Verdel pursues other ambitions as well. She travelled to China, in 2006 where she worked in an illegal orphanage for severely disabled children in Houma. Eventually, with the money she raised, the orphanage managed to get a permit, to move to a new location and to afford medical equipment, wheelchairs and surgeries for a number of the children. She is also the co-founder of a new development project that will try to arrange better education for children in Sierra Leone (West Africa). Some well known personalities have already agreed to contribute to the project, including Dutch football legend Johan Cruijff. Verdel wants to further investigate some of the issues that she has encountered in both her own work and the voluntary projects. According to Verdel: 'Building a school or an orphanage is easy. But where does structural change start? In a country where everything is lacking, should you invest in roads, health care, education or the local economy? There is never enough money for all things at the same time. So where does one start in order to create fundamental changes as fast as possible? That is what I want to learn more about.'
