---- -- The decade of financial access: the role of global banks A Billion to Gain
The United Nations declared 2005 the UN Year of Microcredit. This was much needed recognition for microfinance as a powerful development instrument. An estimated two billion people around the world currently have no access to professional financial services: microfinance can change this. It is therefore becoming increasingly important to know what role multinational commercial banks can play in microfinance.

ING is organising a one-day seminar on 3 February 2006. To keep the debate on microfinance alive and to strengthen the relationship between financial corporations and the microfinance sector. It is the relationship between these two sectors that may prove to be a crucial instrument for increasing the outreach of microfinance in the years to come. For that reason it is essential that discussion continues.

At the seminar, the results of the study by Nyenrode Business Universiteit, as commissioned by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ING, will be presented. The research focuses on current activities of commercial banks and their future plans concerning microfinance, the microfinance experiences of (local) commercial banks as well as on the role governments can play. The report draws several conclusions about the current situation and presents some lessons to be learnt.
