Benoeming bij het Hof van Justitie

De vertegenwoordigers van de regeringen van de lidstaten hebben op 23 oktober 2003

de heer Konrad SCHIEMANN (1)

benoemd tot rechter bij het Hof van Justitie van de Europese Gemeenschappen voor de periode van 1 januari 2004 tot en met 6 oktober 2006, ter vervanging van de heer David EDWARD, die ontslag heeft genomen.

The Right Honourable Lord Justice Schiemann

Full Name: Sir Konrad Hermann Theodor Schiemann

Date of Birth: 15 September 1937

Education

Primary and secondary education at first in Germany then in England.

1961: MA in law, Pembroke College, Cambridge University.

1962 : LLB (higher law degree), Pembroke College, Cambridge University.

Career

Private Practice

1962: Called to the Bar, Inner Temple

1962-1986 : Practice as Barrister, London.
Practice primarily in the area of administrative and commercial law including cases with an EC law element.

1978-1980: Junior Counsel to the Crown.
Regularly representing the Government in judicial review cases.

1980: Appointed Queen's Counsel.

Judicial Appointments

1985: Recorder of the High Court

1986: Appointed a Justice of the High Court, Queen's Bench Division. Adjudicating as a single judge on a wide range of important civil and administrative litigation including cases which turn on points of EC law.

1995: Appointed Lord Justice of Appeal (Court of Appeal) with special

responsibility for EC Law cases.

Presiding over one of the three chambers of the Court of Appeal

handling a wide range of civil and administrative work including EC

law cases (notably the Factortame case).

Other Relevant Appointments

Head of the U.K delegation to the Association of Councils of State and Administrative Jurisdictions of the European Union.

Association comprising two administrative judges from each of the Member Countries and from the European Court of Justice.

Member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for European Legal Studies, Cambridge University.

Member of the Advisory Board of the Center for European Private Law of the University of Münster.

Member of the Council of Management and Chairman of the Comparative Law section of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law.

Treasurer of the Inner Temple.

The Inner Temple is one of the four Inns of Court responsible for barristers' training and discipline. The Treasurer governs the Society with a Committee of senior barristers and judges.

Other Legal Activities

Regular visits to the French Conseil d'Etat as part of British Judicial delegations. Visiting judge at Conseil d'Etat, 1990.

Member of the British-German Jurists Association and of the Bar European Group.

Lectures on EC law to lawyers from Acceding Member States, under the auspices of the Cambridge Centre for European Law. Lectures in England, Germany, Austria, France and China on various legal topics.

Numerous contributions to English and German law books and legal periodicals, most relevantly:
