Centraal Joods Overleg vraagt
Van Boxtel zich ondubbelzinnig van gewraakte conferentieteksten te distantiëren
Aan de vooravond van diens vertrek naar Durban heeft het Centraal Joods Overleg minister Van Boxtel opgeroepen zich ondubbelzinnig te distantiëren van gewraakte conferentieteksten die in de slotverklaring opgenomen zouden moeten worden. De minister vertegenwoordigt Nederland bij een VN-conferentie inzake racisme die deze week in Durban, Zuid Afrika begint. Het Centraal Joods Overleg heeft minister Van Boxtel gevraagd door haar optreden tijdens de conferentie daadkrachtig uit te dragen een aanval op Israel niet te tolereren en het marginaliseren van de Holocaust af te wijzen.
Het Centraal Joods Overleg stelt met grote bezorgdheid vast dat vlak voor de Durban-conferentie de beoogde slotverklaring van de VN-Wereldconferentie passages bevat die in neerbuigende en beledigende zin verwijzen naar uitsluitend Israel, dat op een ten opzichte van de rest van de wereld, geïsoleerde wijze, aan de orde komt.
Ondanks diverse inspanningen zijn pogingen om verwijzingen die het belang van de Holocaust marginaliseren, en Israel tussen alle landen van de wereld isoleren, te verwijderen, niet geheel geslaagd, dit, tegen de bedoeling van de conferentie in. Het stellen van Zionisme als een gedachtegoed dat antisemitische elementen in zich herbergt is een affront voor het Joodse volk.
In de concept-slotverklaring staan onder meer de volgende passages:
* The (holocausts/Holocaust) and the ethnic cleansing of the Arab population in historic Palestine and in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo must never be forgotten;
* We express our deep concern about practices of racial discrimination against the Palestinians as well as other inhabitants of the Arab occupied territories which have an impact on all aspects of their daily existence such that they prevent the enjoyment of fundamental rights, and call for the cessation of all the practices of racial discrimination to which the Palestinians and the other inhabitants of the Arab territories occupied by Israel are subjected.
* The World Conference recognizes with deep concern the increase of racist practices of Zionism and anti-Semitism in various parts of the world, as well as the emergence of racial and violent movements based on racism and discriminatory ideas, in particular the Zionist movement, which is based on racial superiority.
* Calls upon States to commit themselves to undertaking public information campaigns or other more long-term initiatives, inter alia through the media, to alert their societies to the dangers of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, , Islamophobia and racist practices of Zionism and related intolerance.
* Calls upon all relevant United Nations organs to endeavour to bring the foreign occupation of Jerusalem by Israel, together with all its racist practices, to an end and to ensure the recognition of Jerusalem as a city of reverence and religious sanctity for the three major religions of the world which should serve as a focal point of historical and cultural inspiration, a symbol of civilization and religious dialogue and an epitome of tolerance and equality.

Volgens het Centraal Joods Overleg vormt de inhoud van dergelijke passages een regelrechte bedreiging voor het voortbestaan van de staat Israel, de concept-teksten trachten een Joodse aanwezigheid in Israel te delegitimiseren. Daarnaast vormt de verdraaiing van de Joodse én de wereldgeschiedenis een ernstige bedreiging voor alle Joden, waar ook ter wereld, en wanneer niet duidelijk weersproken ook voor Joden in de landen van de Europese Unie.
