Vision is een typische Epitaph band: snel, vrolijk, melodieus en erg
Amerikaans, hoewel de vokalen nogal wat Engelse oi-invloeden bevatten.
Daardoor klinkt Vision behoorlijk verfrissend en origineel, het is dan ook
zeker een van de meer getalenteerde nieuwe punkbands. De Californische
surfband Slacktone specialiseert zich in authentieke instrumentale
surfmuziek. In dit trio topmuzikanten bevindt zich de misschien wel beste
surfdrummer ooit: Dusty Watson. Hij speelde met grootheden als Dick Dale,
Jon & the Nightriders en Agent Orange. Zijn strakke drumspel is op vele
surfplaten te horen, sinds hij in 1966 zijn carriere op 9 jarige leefijd
begon. Ook gitarist Dave Wronski werd uit Jon & the Nightriders gehaald om
met zijn staccato sound Slacktone te versterken. Bassist Mike Sullivan
maakt het drietal compleet. Denk aan Dick Dale, Treble Spankers of Los
Straitjackets: strakke intense surfinstrumentals door drie topmuzikanten.

WAT IS ER GAANDE IN DE WERELD VAN DE UK GARAGE IN NEDERLAND?
Na het succes van vorig jaar van Artful Dodger, Shanks & Bigfoot, Wookie en
Zed Bias, lijkt het genre versplinterd nadat het in Nederland zijn
underground credits niet meer kon houden. Maar in London is er de nieuwe
wereld van Breakbeat-Garage waar maar een naam op ieders lippen ligt:
Stanton Warriors.
Stanton Warriors werden bekend door hun mixes van Gabrielle en Azzido da
Bass; dit jaar mixten ze Fatboy Slim en Macy Gray. Hun meest bekende track
was echter Da Virus.
Stanton Warriors zijn geen nieuwkomers in de scene. Ze maken al flink
wat jaren muziek, maar de recente uitspatting van prachtige producties
heeft
hun ster hoog aan de hemel gebracht.
De samenwerking tussen Dominic B. en Marc Yardly zal volgens dotmusic.com
leiden tot dezelfde status als Bassment Jaxx. Vandaar dat ze waarschijnlijk
ook gecontracteerd zijn door Bassment Jaxx's platenlabel. Deze zomer
releasen ze een mix-cd in de serie van 'Sound of the Pirate'.
Vandaar dat het de tijd is dat T-Time Productions Stanton Worriors plaatst
tussen lange lijst van special guests welke we de afgelopen 1 ? jaar hebben
mogen verwelkomen (Artful Dodger, Wookie, Zed Bias, Mickey Simms, DJ Femme
Fatale).
Oorspronkelijke uit Bristol, draaide Dominic van alles tussen hiphop en
funk
tot wel de hardere, dubbier versie van US Garage. Op 6 juli is de
verwachting gericht om een mix van de wat steviger breakbeat garage en de
funky tunes van 2-step.

1967 was the Summer of Love. Car radios all over America blasted out "Come on, Baby, Light My Fire". The Doors, a new group, shot to fame with this number 1 hit.
Just four years later, the music was seemingly over. On the 3rd of July 1971 Jim Morrison, their twenty-seven year old lead singer, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a Paris bathtub, and quickly buried there in Pere Lachaise cemetery.
Now, 30 years later, the music is still not over. The Doors are selling millions of discs worldwide, and the face of their charismatic singer is everywhere. His grave is one of the top tourist attractions of Paris, along with the Eiffel Tower, the Mona Lisa, and Notre Dame Cathedral. It has become a place of pilgrimage, attracting well over a million and a half visitors a year.
There is an intimate atmosphere, like someone's living room, and the surrounding graves are large, stone sofas that accommodate scores of fans. Candles flicker to drink, drugs, and music. This is the Lourdes of rock and roll, a holy place, a temple, with incense and flowers. The gravestone is an altar where devotees leave notes, poems, graffiti, photographs, and all sorts of other memorabilia. They adorn themselves with his image, and come to be near their hero, to touch him in some way, and to leave a trace of themselves. Some pour wine on his grave in homage, unconsciously mimicking ancient rites for the dead. The place is a strange mixture of ancient ritual and myth, combined with modern media. His epitaph reads, "kata ton daimona eaytoy", which is ancient Greek for "he lived like he had a divine spirit within".
Jim Morrison is a cultural icon, a forever young Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry, and his enduring popularity illustrates how media forms and influences our culture. He has become a media god, kept alive by the latest technology. In a Doors song he sang, "out here in the perimeter, there are no stars, we is stone immaculate". His grave illustrates his words with the multitudes of visitors. No matter how broken and covered with graffiti it gets, it is somehow untaintable, stone immaculate.
I was seventeen in 1967, and I loved The Doors' music from the beginning. I
visited Paris and Pere Lachaise over the years, and finally moved there in
1989 to photograph. It was then that I realized what a pilgrimage
Morrison's grave had become. I met thousands of fans who told me what an
important part of their lives Jim was. I saw a young girl aptly write,
"Hello, I love you, won't you let me jump in your grave", parodying another
Doors song. I met a Vietnam vet with tears in his eyes as he told me he was
in a foxhole in Vietnam when he heard that Jim Morrison was dead. Countless
stories, countless faces, and I'm still left with the mystery of his
enduring popularity. I have a feeling that it has to do with the idea of
freedom, that Jim Morrison and The Doors give people a sense of freedom, to
write their own music or poetry, or whatever else they want to do. Morrison
sang, "I was doing time in the Universal Mind, I was setting people free".
When you listen to The Doors music today, it's as fresh as it was in the
Summer of Love, and when you enter Pere Lachaise and visit Jim Morrison's
grave, you feel truly free.
