Mercury Interactive Launches Internet Performance Map to Visually Capture World Wide Web Traffic and Availability

Topaz WeatherMap Offers First Detailed Look at Correlation of Overall World Wide Web Performance to e-Business Applications; Provides Better Management of Internal Web Infrastructures and ISP Relationships for Improved Customer Experience

Sunnyvale, CA - May 16, 2001- Mercury Interactive Corp. (NASDAQ: MERQ), the leading provider of enterprise testing and performance management solutions, today announced a new Web application performance component to the Topaz family of Web management and diagnostic solutions. The new addition, Topaz WeatherMap, is the first hosted service to monitor the primary networks that comprise the World Wide Web, providing IT managers with a view of how the overall Internet performance may impact their e-business applications enabling IT to better manage their internal Web infrastructures, ISP relationships and improve the customer experience. Topaz WeatherMap uses data gleaned from agents located on a distributed global overlay network, to monitor latencies and delays between network backbones and major service providers. The data captured can be used to gauge the impact of global, regional, or local network performance problems, and helps managers use this data for their advantage. "Barnes and Noble.com has been using the Topaz WeatherMap service for network backbone issues that are beyond the firewall and beyond our control that we can now capture visually, instantly," said Barry Weber, vice president of Infrastructure at Barnes and Noble. "The Topaz WeatherMap is a great addition to our performance management toolkit, helping us isolate problems and delays within city nodes. We can use that information to call our service provider and tell them about the performance degradation in real time."

Topaz WeatherMap Monitors Worldwide Connection Points E-business applications are frequently designed to support geographically dispersed users who connect to systems through paths that pass through several network backbones. Topaz WeatherMap is the only detailed performance and diagnostic tool to monitor delays at connection points between the backbone- where packets of information are handed off between major network providers - following the same route as an e-business transaction throughout the Internet 'cloud' until it reaches its final destination. Using this information, network managers can proactively monitor the performance at points of interconnectivity to gauge the impact of network delays for their end users. With Topaz WeatherMap, they can diagnose network problems, view trends and make informed decisions about their provider's service levels. All of this data is delivered to the Topaz Console on the user's browser, where managers can see several different views of performance thresholds and alerts, and drill down to specific components in the infrastructure for fast problem resolution.
"Mercury Interactive is offering customers a powerful capability - to see a global map of performance metrics for the federation of networks that make the Internet - and be able to drill down on problems and use the data to better serve their own customers," said Ido Sarig, Mercury Interactive's vice president of products in the Application Performance Management business unit. "Topaz WeatherMap is a very compelling service for a variety of applications, specifically backbone diagnostics and how performance relates to the customer's e-business, and to monitor service levels between ISPs and the customer site."

Topaz WeatherMap Customization Allows IT to Create Personalized Views

One of the key features that the Topaz WeatherMap provides IT managers with is the ability to create customized views of the different backbones that correlate and connect to their business. IT managers can personalize the Topaz WeatherMap to measure performance bottlenecks leading to their Web site from different locations across city nodes, countries, continents, as well as individual backbones. Reports and graphs provide historical charts on performance between countries and city node pairs, and show the performance between two individual backbone providers. Metrics such as latency and availability can help users spot deviations over time, and they can use the data to monitor and communicate with ISPs and make informed decisions on service levels and communicate problems to customers with live data as a backup.
